At Morphett Vale Dental Care, we often receive similar questions from patients who want to better understand how to look after their oral health. Below, we’ve answered five of the most common ones.

1. How often should I visit the dentist?

For most people, it is recommended to see a dentist every six months for a check-up and professional clean. Regular visits allow potential problems to be detected early and can help reduce the need for more complex treatment later. The exact frequency may vary depending on individual needs, such as existing dental conditions or higher risk of gum disease or decay.

2. Are electric toothbrushes better than manual ones?

Both manual and electric toothbrushes can be effective if used properly. The important factors are using a soft-bristled brush, the correct technique, and brushing for at least two minutes twice a day. Some people find electric toothbrushes helpful because of the built-in timers and the motion of the bristles, but the choice ultimately depends on what works best for you.

3. Why do my gums bleed?

Bleeding gums can be a sign of gum disease, often caused by a build-up of plaque and tartar around the gumline. It’s important to seek advice from your dentist or oral health professional if you notice this, as untreated gum disease can lead to further problems with your teeth and gums.

4. Why do I need a filling if my tooth doesn’t hurt?

Many dental issues, such as decay, can develop without causing pain in the early stages. By the time a tooth becomes painful, the problem may already be advanced and require more extensive treatment. That’s why regular dental visits and x-rays are important to detect issues before they become more serious.

5. Why are my teeth sensitive?

Tooth sensitivity is often caused by thinning enamel, gum recession, or exposure of the inner part of the tooth. It can also be linked to habits like over-brushing, teeth grinding, or a diet high in acidic drinks. Sensitivity may also signal decay or gum problems, so it’s important to have it checked by a dentist. In some cases, special toothpaste or other treatments may help manage sensitivity.
