If you’ve been told you need a filling, one of the first questions that may come to mind is: what type of material will be used?
At Morphett Vale Dental Care, we focus on using modern tooth-coloured materials to restore teeth. While traditional silver (amalgam) fillings are still used in some practices, we choose composite resin (white) fillings because of their natural appearance and ability to bond directly to the tooth.
Here’s an overview of the main differences between the two filling types.
Silver (Amalgam) Fillings
- Composition: Made from a mixture of metals, typically including silver, tin, copper, and mercury.
- Strength: Known for durability and long-term wear, particularly in back teeth exposed to heavy chewing forces.
- Limitations: Over time, amalgam can expand and contract with temperature changes, which may contribute to cracks or fractures in the surrounding tooth.
- Appearance: Silver in colour, so they are more noticeable compared to natural teeth.
White (Composite Resin) Fillings
- Composition: Made from a blend of plastic (resin) and finely ground glass particles.
- Bonding: These fillings adhere directly to the tooth structure, which may help support the remaining tooth.
- Aesthetics: Tooth-coloured, allowing them to blend with your natural teeth.
- Versatility: Useful for repairing both front and back teeth, as well as small chips.
- Considerations: May not last as long as amalgam in very large restorations, and they can be more technique-sensitive to place.
Making an Informed Choice
Both amalgam and composite fillings have been widely studied and are considered safe by major dental and health organisations worldwide, including the Australian Dental Association (ADA) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
At Morphett Vale Dental Care, we do not place new amalgam fillings, but we are happy to discuss all options with you so you can make an informed decision that best suits your needs. If you already have amalgam fillings that are working well, they often do not need to be replaced unless they are failing, damaged, or causing problems.
